In recent years, doctors and medical professionals such as Dr. Marvell Scott have moved away from using prescription medication to help patients manage pain. Prescription pain relievers have in many ways caused more harm than good, as they don't actually treat the root of the problem and can in many cases cause a number of unpleasant side effects. There's also the issue of addiction, which is becoming a great enough concern that some states, such as Pennsylvania, recently revised their pain treatment guidelines to reduce the amount of prescription medication abuse. The Prescription Pain Reliever Problem Prescription pain relievers seem to offer patients a miracle cure. They take a pill and the pain goes away almost instantly. But one of the major issues with these medicines is that they are doing little, if anything, to actually treat the cause of the pain. The chemicals in these drugs pushes down inflammation and pain. Prescription pain medications act as a mask. Their effect is only temporary, and a patient soon needs to take another pill to get the same results. Since patients continually need to take more medicine to get or maintain results, the risk for addiction and overdose is high. Opioid pain relievers cause 17,000 deaths each year. They are a high risk option and don't actually solve a patient's problem in the long run. An Emerging Option: Biopuncture Prescription drugs aren't the only way to manage or deal with pain. Dr. Marvell Scott is the founder of Performance Health, an integrated practice that specializes in sports medicines. He points out that he and his staff "steer away from prescription medicines." Instead, a treatment known as biopuncture is the preferred therapy at Performance Health. According to Dr. Scott, biopuncture is "a non-cortisone injection. They are natural anti-inflammatories that originally became popular in Europe. Unlike cortisone, these natural anti-inflammatories will not deteriorate any of the tendons, ligaments, etc and will promote healing rather than just masking the pain.” Dr. Scott also adds that the “biopuncture are non-addictive injections." The exact ingredients used in a biopuncture injection depends on the condition being treated. The therapy isn't limited to injury and is also used to treat a range of medical issues including irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, and arthritis. Biopuncture injections typically include plant-based formulas. Injecting the formula tends to increase the healing effect and response. The injections don't mask pain. Instead, they stimulate the immune response, encouraging the body to heal itself. They reduce the amount of pain a patient experiences. While some patients may be concerned about the injection portion of biopuncture, the needle used is very small and most people don't feel discomfort during treatment. The length of the treatment and number of injections a person needs depends on the scope of their pain. In some cases, Dr. Marvell Scott notes, a patient only needs an injection or two. Others may need multiple injections over the course of several weeks. Add Comment |
